My son loves to go to Mexican restaurants…clearly he’s mine. So, when his 13th birthday celebration trip was cancelled and we were all under Safer at Home Orders because of COVID-19, he was understandably upset. It broke my heart, so, we brought the Mexican restaurant home, and celebrated his lucky 13th birthday with a Taco night that would be perfect for a Cinco de Mayo Party at home!
Cinco de Mayo Decorations
Since I planned on hosting a big siesta for Cinco de Mayo anyway, I already had a lot of party decorations at home. I ordered most of the party supplies from Oriental Trading Company.
Then, I gathered stuff from home to fill in the rest of the party space. I ordered a picado banner from OTC, but you could use this DIY Cinco de Mayo Picado Banner to decorate your space too! I almost made another DIY Cactus Cupcake Stand, but my older son made a HUGE cake and we needed something more sturdy.
Cinco de Mayo Party Ideas
We decorated our outdoor party deck to resemble the patio area of one of our favorite Mexican restaurants. We hung picado banners all over the back deck, and on the back wall. Then, I covered our counter with a piece of burlap. I added a colorful bunting to the front of the counter, and then I draped a brightly colored table cloth over a box to add some height.
I ordered a lot of food and drinks before the party, so I used some of the food and drinks to add pops of color to the table too. My kids love Mexican sodas, so those were a special treat for everyone. I also made fresh lemonade, for the kids. But, I added a splash of my favorite tequila for myself!
Cinco de Mayo Desserts
My sweet birthday boy only wanted a salted chocolate cake for his birthday dessert. We added fun candy rocks and faux succulent to the top to tie into our fiesta theme.
If I could have gone to the store, I would have picked up ingredients for churros and homemade flan.
If you enjoyed this fun fiesta, be sure to check out some of our past celebrations too!
