Layer on Love Holiday Party. I shared my youngest son’s recent holiday party on the blog, we decided to ask each guest to bring a gift to donate to those in need. It was a truly heartwarming experience and it encouraged me to do the same thing with my junior high school boys’ holiday party. However, for this party, I decided to ask each guest to text a donation to One Warm Coat. The boys, obviously, didn’t want a themed party with activities and decor. Their request was simple, pizza, garlic bread, and Coca-Cola™ and Coke Zero™. They asked for exclusive access to the party deck in the back yard, but the weather was nasty, so we had to move the party inside, much to their chagrin. Before we left the party, we gathered everyone and explained what this party was about…yes, everyone would have plenty of Coca-Cola™ and there was enough pizza for a herd of wild elephants, but more importantly, this is the season of giving back. Every single guest at the party lives in a warm home in the suburbs, with plenty of food in the kitchen and warm clothes in their closets. Most of the guests have preformed community service for school and church, so they have seen our community’s poorest. They are, for the most part, a good group of young {almost} adults, with kind and generous hearts. They know that for the nearly 15% of Americans living in poverty, a winter coat is something “extra” that isn’t in the budget. So, when I explained that we could all give back by simply texting “LOVE” to 501501 they would donate $5 to One Warm Coat, they all pulled out their phones, even my son with his “phone of shame”, and texted right away! I went on to share that the Coca-Cola™ bottles in their hands were purchased at Walmart to support the One Warm Coat charity, because together, Walmart and Coca-Cola™ are donating a half a million coats to One Warm Coat! Last year Coca-Cola worked with One Warm Coat to provide a layer of love for over half a million people in need. This year, they’re doing it again and want to make it easier for you to get involved. {Please do not take your coats to Walmart, simply text LOVE to 501501 to support One Warm Coat} By the end of the party, all 20 guests had donated $5 via text to One Warm Coat. It was a great way to give back simply, during a very busy season.  The party was a huge success for several reasons, but, we all felt like the most important reason was the way we gave back. Be sure to treat yourself and your family to a sweet treat for all the good you’re doing by picking up Coca-Cola products at Walmart, and text LOVE to 501501 to help someone in need this holiday season.
