Football Cookies

Football Cookies.  It’s officially college football season, and my guys are all pretty happy about it!  We kicked off the season (see what I did there) with a fun football party all about our favorite college football boys, the Georgia Bulldogs!  

As a party girl, I know how an amazing cookie can really add to a party.  I also know how you  need to be a gifted artist to make amazing cookies.  But, I am not one to back down to a challenge, and I decided to try to make some cookies for this little party.

Good Housekeeping TV offers a variety of classes, free shorts, and inexpensive longer ones.  I watched the free short Beginner’s Cookie Decorating 101 by Patty Paige and gathered self confidence.  I thought, I can do this!  I am artistic! So, I went for it, I took the full class…I watched the 70 minute video, and thought, hmmm, I hope I can still do this.  I waited a day or two, and I watched a few more minutes, and downloaded the notes that came with the class.  Then, I did it.   

I used store bought cookie dough, and rolled it out, and cut my shapes (from Michael’s).  Then I made my royal icing.  It was easy, so much easier than I thought it would be!

Then, I separated and colored it.  

Next, I outlined my shapes, I could use more practice with that…but I was happy.

Then I flooded the cookies and I was very happy!

Once the icing dried, I added laces…and heard “Laces out Dan!” over and over in my head. 

A few days later, I made the jerseys.  My outlining was much better, the flooding looked great. But I used white icing that wasn’t as fresh as I thought and my numbers looked a little sad.  That was all my fault.  Thankfully, they were still yummy, and our family didn’t care that they weren’t perfect.

I decided to get “fancy”‘ with my football cookies and put them in a bed of grass frosting on large round sugar cookies.  I loved the way they turned out, even if they weren’t perfect. 

I will say, I plan on leaving a lot of the cookie art to the pros, but in  a pinch, I am confident that I can do these again, and I am actually looking forward to it!  I am really glad I took the class, and I think I will take a few more.  Patti even has a few more cookie tutorials.   They are easy to follow along, and you can replay them as you wish.  There is a printable how to, and even downloads and discussions available.  It’s absolutely worth the money!
