Vintage Memorial Day Celebration

Vintage Memorial Day Celebration. As we enter into a long weekend full of family, friends, BBQ’s, and more, I feel like it is so very important to remember why we have a 3 Day Weekend…The men and women of the United States Armed Forces that have given their lives to keep America free. Their families that have lost their loved ones prematurely…the mothers and fathers without their children, the children without their mothers or fathers, the wives without husbands, the husbands without wives. So, before you bbq, before you jump into the pool, please remember what we are “celebrating.”

I have had this amazing vintage style pedal airplane since my third son turned 3. He has always been in love with planes and space, so it was a perfect gift for him…little did he know, I love a little more than him, and I have kept in the garage since his younger brother outgrew it. I am in charge of the desserts this year for our Memorial Day celebration, and I wanted to incorporate the plane. I found an amazing vintage 48 star American Flag on eBay and I hung that as the backdrop in front of a pair of louvered doors. To add more vintage vibes to the table, I filled an old Ball Canning Jar with red gum balls, and used my vintage Coca Cola crate. Several years ago, I found vintage military mail kits, so I placed that box on the table as well. I want my kids to ask about them, so we can share a “teachable moment.”

To keep things relatively simple, I have store bought apple pie, mini cupcakes, and cookies. I also filled apothecary jars with red, white, and blue candies. I did make stacked red, white, and blue shortcakes. I bought pre-made shortcakes and added sliced strawberries and whipped cream, then another shortcake with blueberries, whipped cream, and a Cherry Man Cherry on top. (Seriously, those are the best cherries EVER!)
