Build a Breakfast Bar. I recently shared a back to school breakfast bar I set up for the boys. They really loved it, and have asked me to do it again for them soon. They like the idea of all of their breakfast options being on one table and the freedom to choose what they want. I like it too! So, I was thrilled when I was asked to share how to build a better breakfast…I knew exactly what I would do!
I partnered with The Great American Milk Drive for this post. I am a firm believer that childhood should be filled with playing, learning and growing. But for many children who face hunger, even basic staples like milk – and the nutrients that help power childhood activities – are missing. Now, you can help feed a childhood – by purchasing 1 or more of these products; milk, Lender’s Bagels, and Del Monte Fruit and Veggie Fusions, you are helping Feeding America provide nutrient- rich milk to kids and families in need. Visit milklife.com/give to learn more. Milk is naturally nutrient rich and powers potential – if you have access to it. Milk’s 9 essential nutrients, including 8 grams of high-quality protein per 8 ounce serving, can help to ensure that kids have the potential to play, learn and grow. Join Feeding America in The Great American Milk Drive to help deliver highly desired and nutrient-rich gallons of milk to hungry children and families who need it most. More than 14 million servings of milk have been delivered to food banks through this first-of-its-kind initiative. Lender’s bagels are filling – sustaining kids all morning. My boys love Lender’s Bagels, all of the varieties. Plain, Blueberry and Cinnamon-Raisin flavors are kid-friendly & great for the whole family. Lender’s has a bagel for Everyone! Bagels for breakfast are timesaving, easy, tasty and nutritious, they are easily found in the refrigerated dairy section. Del Monte Fruit & Veggie Fusions is the only fruit cup product that provides 1 serving of fruits and veggies in a single cup. The veg is in the juice but you’d never know it. (My kids had NO IDEA!) Be sure to look for specially marked Del Monte Fruit & Veggie Fusions packages on shelf at Walmart for valuable coupons for Del Monte and Lender’s products.
Since the kids would be “building” a better breakfast, I wanted to have the breakfast bar have a construction theme. Even if my kids are bigger, it was still a fun theme! I used the construction party printable collection I created for We Heart Parties, and created a few coordinating printables too. (Below) I also borrowed a few construction trucks and tools from a friend. Then, I went to Walmart to gather our breakfast tools. Milk, Lenders Bagels, and Del Monte Fruit Fusion Cups. While I was there, I grabbed orange napkins and cups, and yellow paper plates from the party section. All total, the party supplies for our breakfast bar cost about $5! I didn’t count the food costs, because the boys would eat breakfast anyway, and that is just part of our everyday food costs. Seriously, for about $5 and 20 minutes of prep time, you could have a fabulous way to start the morning with your kids! And, it’s all simple, delicious, and nutritious foods, the kids can prepare themselves. Plus, the three items together provide enough nutrients to fuel your little builders throughout the day.
I printed the construction party printables the night before, and set up the table in our great room. I used a piece of peg board as the backdrop, and saw horses as the table legs. Then, I put the trucks on the table ready to be filled in the morning before I woke up the boys. I even used construction clamps to hold the banners. Crayons and plastic spoons were wrapped with a free printable napkin wrapper (get the printables below) so the boys could grab and go. I also had some place mats printed on 11×17 paper at the local printer for a few dollars. Cups and paper plates were on the table for easy self service too. I added printable party circles to the tops of the Del Monte Fruit and Veggie Fusions, and popped them in the fridge overnight.
In the morning, I woke up a few minutes before the boys, and pulled the Del Monte Fruit and Veggie Fusion cups from the fridge and put them in the scoop of a tractor. Then, I added ice to the back of a big dump truck, and put the milk on ice. Finally, I added the Lender’s Bagels (still in the bags to keep them from getting hard) to the back of a smaller dump truck. It took less than 5 minutes to set up in the morning.
The kids were super excited when they woke up and saw they had to “build” themselves a better breakfast! I was super excited to send the boys off to school with a nutrient rich, full belly, and a smile on their faces…even from the sullen and moody pre-teen set.
