Thankful Thanksgiving Leftover Box DIY. I blinked and October was over, and in an effort to be ready for the holiday season that is hot on my heels, I made sweet leftover boxes for our friends and family to carry home their delicious Thanksgiving leftovers home in. These boxes are so perfect for carrying leftovers AND using after the holiday.
Of course I had to go to my favorite toy store, Home Depot (find your nearest store here) to gather supplies to make the boxes! While I wandered the aisles looking longingly at all the things I need want, I stumbled on the cleaning supply aisle. I’m not going to lie, I don’t know that I have ever bought cleaning supplies at Home Depot. But, since I was there already, I bought a cart full of supplies to clean up the disaster I call home. My family is in charge of cleaning areas of the house, but I do deep cleaning…apparently some people in the house are REALLY bad at cleaning. And, I am not sure they have ever dusted…in fact, I wonder if someone snuck into my home and sprinkled dust on all.the.things. Part of my holiday decorating routine is deep cleaning. I knew I would need a great all purpose cleaner, so I grabbed a few bottles of Scrubbing Bubbles® Fantastik® 32 oz. All-Purpose Cleaner. It’s antibacterial solution cuts to the center of grease and grime and disinfects the area. Since it’s formulated with a no-rinse solution, you don’t have to spend as much time cleaning! (YAY!) The spray bottle is super easy to use, and I was able to go from room to room and clean the whole house, from counters to stovetops, with Scrubbing Bubbles® Fantastik®! I also picked up Windex® Original Glass Cleaner and Pledge® Lemon Clean. Y’all, Windex® Original Glass Cleaner is the best! You can use it on glass, mirrors, counters, appliances, stoves, sinks, stainless steel, chrome, and EVEN sealed granite! Everyone grew up using this cleaning staple on the mirrors and windows for it’s unbeatable streak free shine, but it “Gives Life a Sparkle™”, and starts working on dirt before you even begin wiping! All you have to do is Spray and Wipe! I don’t know (or want to know) what is on the mirrors and surfaces, but, let’s just say I was glad to have Windex® Original Glass Cleaner in my cleaning box. And, whatever Windex® Original Glass Cleaner and Scrubbing Bubbles® Fantastik® cleaner couldn’t clean, Pledge® Lemon Clean did! Pledge® Lemon Clean is my go to because it smells so fresh and clean AND it features Allergen Trappers® to remove dust and up to 90 percent of the allergens found in dust, and in my house, this is very important! I love how Pledge® makes all of my surfaces shine. Pledge® Lemon Clean can be used to dust, shine and protect a variety of household hard surfaces including wood, laminate, stainless steel, leather, marble, granite and plastic. {For best results, spray onto a cloth or hold can upright 6-8″ from surface to be cleaned.}
Be on the lookout for Pledge® product promotions on display in Home Depot stores 11/1/17 through 1/31/18! Now that I was working in a clean house, and had all the supplies to keep it clean, I went to work on the Thankful Thanksgiving Leftover Boxes for our friends and family to take home after our feast!
In years past, I have simply put Thanksgiving leftovers into a bag and called it done…but, the holidays are about family, and since my dad passed away and more recently, my father in law and uncle passed away, I am truly thankful to have the family I do have. So, I wanted to make our guests a little something to take home their take home leftovers in. This is a simple DIY project and is super affordable!
Supplies:
* 1″x4″ Common Board (8′ makes 2+ boxes)
* 1/4″ x 4″ Clear Poplar (2 – 3′ boards make 2+ boxes)
* Saw
* Sander
* Wood Glue
* Tape Measure
* Nail Gun or Hammer and Finishing Nails
* Optional – Paint or Stain and Iron On Vinyl and Iron
Measure and cut 2- 1″x4″ pieces and 2 1/4″ x4″ pieces to 10″. Set aside, and measure and cut 2- 1″x4″ pieces to 6″.
Sand off any rough edges on all the pieces.
Run a thin bead of glue on the edge of the 1x4x10 and line up the 1/4×4 to be flush on three sides. Nail in place. Repeat with the second two boards. This will create the long sides of the box and they will resemble an L shape.
Next, add a thin bead of glue to the edges and bottoms of the 1x4x6, leaving a 1/2″ of space in the middle. Place between the long edges of the box, leaving a small gap in the middle. (The total outside dimension of the boxes will be 10″x7″) Adjust the sides to be flush and nail in place.
Allow the glue to dry, and then you can paint or stain the boxes. I used Iron On Vinyl and an Iron to add the word Thankful to each box.
I picked up some small dishes with lids and take out style boxes to put the food in in the box as well.
My family saw me working on the boxes and wanted one of their own so badly, won’t they be surprised to actually get one in a few weeks?!
