Farmhouse Sign DIY with Cricut Maker
Farmhouse Sign DIY. Typically my style is rustic…anything old and used, I want to either reuse it or find a way to recreate my own version. Which is why I love/hate that farmhouse style is so popular right now. I love the new inspiration, I am not a fan of it being everywhere and mass produced {and sometimes overpriced}. But, I discovered how easy it is to use Cricut Iron On Vinyl on just about anything, and I am now putting it on just about anything. And, since wood has long been a favorite medium for me to work with…Let’s just say I have made a LOT of wood signs! My hubby and I have been together for 21 years, and married for 20, but, we rarely celebrate Valentine’s Day. This year, I decided to surprise him a little early and make a 5 foot sign to hang above our bed. I looked online for inspiration, but I wasn’t finding anything that truly spoke to me. After a few days of thinking about this project, I decided to use a line from our wedding song on the sign. While my hubby was at hockey practice with one of our boys, two of our other boys and I went to Home Depot to gather some supplies. Home Depot cut the wood to size for me, so I didn’t have to get a full sheet of plywood in the car with the kids and myself.
Supplies:
Plywood cut to fit your space – This one is hung above a king size bed and is 5ft long and 1.5ft tall
Cricut Machine – I use my Maker for everything
Cricut EasyPress or Iron
Nail Gun/ Construction Adhesive
Saw – Unless you have Home Depot cut it.
When we got home from Home Depot, my son sanded the sign while I cut the trim pieces to fit. (2 pieces 5′ long and 2 pieces 13.5″ long) We painted a light coat of DecoArt Chalky White paint on the sign, and Vintage Wash on the trim pieces. While the paint dried, I cut my vinyl. (Mirror the cut, and cut it shiny side down) I wanted to save vinyl, so I ungrouped my text and moved the text around on the cut preview so it would all fit on one roll of black Cricut Iron On Vinyl.
After the vinyl was cut, I weeded it and cut the text out. Once the paint was dry, my son and I nailed the trim pieces onto the wood from the back.
Finally, I was ready to add the Iron On Vinyl. I marked a line for the text and a center line so I could have an evenly spaced sign. I used the Cricut Protective Sheet between the Vinyl and the Easy Press, and pressed each word at 335* for about 20-30 seconds. Once the text was on the sign, I hung it over our bed. When my hubby came home from hockey practice my son and I led him into our room to show him what we made. He was so sweet, he couldn’t believe we made it for him! This would be an awesome wedding gift or wedding project too!
The cut file for this project can be found here. The font is Allegretto Script.
