DIY Washer Toss Game
DIY Washer Toss Game. Our son graduated from high school this week, and we are hosting a large open house style celebration for him. We are lucky enough to have a fairly big back yard, with a pool, and two separate seating areas, as well as plenty of grassy space to set up back yard games.
Our second son plays hockey almost every night, and at one of the local rinks, a group of men’s league players gathers in the courtyard outside the rink to drink, chat, and play Washers…I wasn’t too sure what game it was, but a quick google search showed me it was an easy game to make and play. I decided to build a set for our oldest’s graduation party, and it’s already been played with about a dozen times this week!
There are tons of DIYS online for this game, but I put a little twist on it to make it match our party deck.
Supplies:
2- 18”x18” squares of plywood
4- 18” long 2×4’s
4- 15” long 2×4’s
Pallet wood cut to fit inside washer toss box
16- 3” deck screws
16- 1.5” deck screws
2- 4” PVC couplers {or tin cans}
8- 2” washers
Drill and bit to predrill pilot holes
I found our plywood at the local hardware store in the cull lumber bin for 70% off and asked an employee to cut two 18” squares for me. {I don’t like cutting large pieces of plywood, so I almost always have it cut at the store}
Once I was home I cut 4 18” pieces of 2×4, and 4 15” pieces of 2×4. These will be the frame for the plywood.
Use a little bit of wood glue on the ends of the the 2×4’s and create a frame. {15” board butts up to 18” board} Predrill 2 pilot holes in each end of the 18” board into the 15” board and secure with 3” screws. You should have 2 18” square frames.
Add a line of wood glue around the top of the frame, and place the plywood square on top. Predrill two pilot holes on each side, and secure with 1.5” screws.
This is where you can get creative. You will need 15 square inches of covering inside your washer box. I used old pallet wood, and just cut it to fit, adding a few extra seams. I used wood glue and a nail gun to secure the pallet pieces to the box.
Once the box was done, I used E600 glue to secure the pvc fitting to the middle of the box, and allowed it to dry overnight.
While the pvc was drying, I painted the washers with spray paint.I want to stain the outside of the boxes and add our monogram to them, but I ran out of time before our party this week, but how great would these be at a weeding? And you could certainly save quite a bit by recycling tin cans instead of PVC!
