Mardi Gras
Mardi Gras! Laissez les Bon Temps Rouler! I shared the recipe for King Cake Donuts in the Spring Issue of EPM, but I promised to share the free printables on the blog, as well as a Pin-able and printable recipe.
I love donuts, I love cream cheese, I love pecans, brown sugar, vanilla…yeah, I love it all! I’ve never actually had a king cake, so I wasn’t sure if this recipe would work. I reached out to Aimee Broussard and Pink Cake Plate for their input, and I found a King Cake filling recipe from Frog Prince Paperie that I was able to adapt to make a yummy King Cake Donut filling! Let me just tell you, my boys inhaled these donuts! They were FANTASTIC warm and fresh, but still very good the next day.
Recipe:
Adapted from Frog Prince Paperie
Donuts:
Grands Flakey Layers Biscuits
4 oz cream cheese, softened
1/4 cup powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup chopped pecans
1/4 cup brown sugar
Frosting:
3 Cups powdered sugar
1/4-1/3 Cup water (add slowly)
1/2 + teaspoon vanilla extract
pinch of salt
Donuts:
Mix all ingredients together with a mixer.
Pull biscuits apart (as you would when it is fully cooked)
Add a spoonful of cream cheese, sugar, pecan, vanilla extract mix
Put biscuit back together, pinching sides together
Fry for a few minutes on each side
Place on a paper towel for a few moments (to allow the excess oil to “drain”)
While it is on the paper towel, spoon frosting on top, it will slowly melt over the donut
Sprinkle with colored sugar crystals while the frosting is still wet.
I made the frosting first. It can be left at room temp for a while, and since it is very thick
it’s easier to work with at room temp.
Place sugar, salt, and vanilla in a mixing bowl, slowly add water as you mix until frosting
As promised, here are the free printable Mardi Gras tags!
Please remember our free printables are for personal use only. They cannot be edited, altered, or resold.
