Outdoor Party Lighting Tips. Summer is in full swing around here and we are happily entertaining our friends and guests several nights a week…inevitably, we are outside after the sun fades, and I am scrambling for lighting, because no one wants to end the fun!
Now, I know this is a budget friendly and DIY style blog, but I have to be honest with you…when it comes to my shoes, tools, and household items, I will and do pay a good amount for them. Budget friendly sometimes means paying more for something you know will last. With that said, the lighting I am sharing is not all inexpensive, but, it will last a long time, and it is a timeless, classic style that you will enjoy for years to come!
For our outdoor, evening parties, I like to have snacks and treats outside on a table, usually against our back wall. Overhead side lighting on each side of the table is so helpful! Nothing gets lost in a shadow and is well lit through out the night. A wall light is also great near door entrances (especially with a step) and outdoor showers. I love the classic look of the Carson 12′ Wall light in white. We are ordering 4 for our back wall after we repaint the house. One for each corner, and two in the middle of the wall about 6-7′ apart. The middle two will make the back yard brighter, by flooding the middle with light, plus they will be spaced to allow for a snack table.
After you have wall lighting addressed, it is important to add accent lights. We just built an enormous raised garden bed in our yard, and we have been searching for the perfect way to light it. Until, now. I will be buying several 20′ cords of LED lights for the garden. Those will be perfect for the palm trees and along the garden bed, plus they will illuminate the back of our large back yard just enough to keep everything visible, without using a flood light. I have seen these called fairy lights recently, and they truly look magical wrapped around trees! And, at less than $40 for a 20′ strand, they are the most affordable option I have been able to find!
Finally, soft lighting for sitting areas is a must. And the best way to achieve that is with string lights. We have a fire pit area with Adirondack Chairs in a semi-circle around it, as well as a pergola with a farm house table. Both of those areas are screaming for better lighting. I used an old ladder and stapled Globe String Lights to it and hung it directly over our table to act as a chandelier. But, I need to add a few more strands of lights to the pergola, I really love the Cargo Pendant String Lights for the rest of the pergola. But I will add several more of the Globe String Lights to the fire pit seating area. I think I can speak for a large group in saying string lights are the perfect accent light! They can be masculine, feminine, romantic, industrial, and even family friendly! They can be hung taught or even with a swag and look fantastic in any setting.
The whole idea for outdoor party lighting is to help make the party last longer! A will lit outdoor space will transform your yard, deck, or acreage into the ideal setting for family and friends to spend the evening celebrating! I hope I have helped shed some light on your outdoor lighting needs!

I love everything about outdoor lighting. I hate using bright lights during a party- really ruins the mood. We have globe lights and those work well, but I am digging the fairy lights!!

Great post! I love outdoor cafe lights for our tent on our deck – we have a makeshift ‘sun room’ and at night, the lights give off the perfect amount of illumination.
