Winter Ice Cream Sundae Bar

I have a love hate relationship with Christmas Break…it’s not long enough to forget all of our school routines completely, but the kids start to get a little stir crazy after a few days. My boys also tend to get a ton of candy and sweets during the holidays. Between Santa’s Birthday and Christmas stockings, we have enough candy and sweets to open a candy store. And, even though I am jokingly referred to as the Candy Dealer among my group of friends because of our constant selection of candy, I don’t really want the boys to eat it all all day long! I recently saw an article on Yahoo! sharing different ways to enjoy ice cream during the winter. I don’t know why I never think to enjoy ice cream in the winter, we live in Florida, and I am literally wearing shorts right now, it’s certainly not too cold to enjoy it! So, with my winter ice cream treat inspiration, antsy boys, and metric ton of holiday treats and sweets, I surprised the boys with an ice cream sundae bar!
I started with a trip to Wal-Mart for some supplies. I bought five rolls of pink crepe paper, and one package of pink treat cups. If you follow me on Instagram, you saw how I made the backdrop.
Backdrop DIY:
* One 1″x2″ about 4-6′ long
* 4-5 rolls of crepe paper
* Staple gun
* Cup hooks or 3M Command strips to hang
* If you are hanging from the ceiling like I did, you will need twine or fishing line to hang it too
Staple 4-5′ lengths of crepe paper to your board, layering and staggering as you go. After about 20 minutes, you have an affordable and awesome backdrop.
Once I finished up the backdrop, I shopped the house for the rest of the supplies. I bought the polka dot table cloth years ago from Target, it’s actually a sheet set. I grabbed a few of my cake plates, and white serving dishes and set up the table. I used some of the candy we had, some left over chocolate chip cookies, homemade caramel pieces, fruit, chocolate and strawberry syrup, whipped cream, and cherries. To help get some of the boys wiggles out, we made homemade ice cream in a ziploc baggie. So, I put those ingredients on a cake plate too. I used simple glasses from Target, and colorful paper straws for their Santa Coke Floats.
After everything was set up, I called the boys out to help make ice cream and make their amazing Winter ice cream sundaes! They were so excited! They danced, jumped, and wiggled to make the ice cream, and even though it was a little runny, the kids had fun, and mama had a half gallon of ice cream in the freezer, just in case. The sky was the limit for their sundaes and they loved it! We made Coke Floats with their Santa coke, and “Coke Floats never tasted better!”
It was a great way to spend a Sunday, and use up a lot of the holiday sweets in the house! I think we might make this a new annual tradition!
