Day of The Dead Printable Tags
I love the history of Dia de los Muertos. The idea of celebrating those that passed before us in such a happy and colorful way is so much more appealing to me than mourning in black. My sons are truly gifted artists. My younger son was doodling on my iPad, and I saw some of his skulls. So, I asked him to embellish a couple of them for me. Then, I used his {sugar} skull to create Day of the Dead printable tags.
Day of the Dead
My boys were fairly young when their grandfathers passed away, so we took the opportunity to start celebrating the Day of the Dead on a smaller scale. It really helped the boys with their mourning process. It’s truly such a beautiful celebration. These Sugar Skull Printables were from one of our first celebrations. They were also drawn by one of my boys. That same year, we also made Sugar Skull Tin Can Candle Lanterns.
Day of the Dead is a multi-day holiday that brings family and friends together. They pray for and remember friends and family members who have died, while supporting their spiritual journey. In Mexican culture, death is viewed as a natural part of the human cycle. Mexicans view it not as a day of sadness but as a day of celebration because their loved ones awake and celebrate with them.
They believe that the gates of heaven are opened at midnight on October 31, and the spirits of all deceased children are allowed to reunite with their families for 24 hours. Then, the spirits of the adults come down to enjoy the festivities that are prepared for them. Finally, on November 2nd, the celebration moves to the cemetery. Local bands play music while families clean headstones and the cemetery. Once the cleaning is done, they play card games, and celebrate the lives of their loved ones.
Day of the Dead Skulls
Day of the Dead Skulls, or Sugar Skulls are used to decorate the altar for Dia de los Muertos celebrations. If they have a name on them, they are used to honor that particular person. They are a very important part of Day of the Dead celebrations.
Dia de los Muertos Printables
I grew up in a home that encouraged religious exploration, and celebrating foreign customs. As a result, I have raised my own boys to be very open minded, and we celebrate lots of holidays that aren’t typically associated with a middle class Lutheran and Methodist family. Dia de los Muertos is by far one my favorites, even if we do celebrate on a smaller scale.
I used my son’s sugar skull artwork to create printable tags that can be used on Sugar Skull Lollipops, or gifts for those that have passed. I actually have a few things from my boys’ grandfathers that I will wrap and give to them with the sugar skull tags on them.
You can find the tags in the shop, use the code SUGARSKULL to download them FREE.
