DIY Cactus Cupcake Stand
DIY Cactus Cupcake Stand. YOU GUYS!! The Cricut Knife Blade has arrived! I am SOOOO excited! I was lucky enough to be invited out to Cricut recently to get hands on training, and I was sent a Knife Blade a few weeks ago so I could use it, and share my newfound knowledge with you.
I have used the new Knife Blade to cut a lot of fun stuff, but, hands down my favorite is the Cricut Chipboard. It is thick, and sturdy, and I have used it to make the Cactus Cupcake Stand, props for my Kentucky Derby Party, and even letters for my son’s upcoming graduation party. The Knife Blade has flawlessly and effortlessly cut everything with ease. I love being able to make my own custom Cinco de Mayo decorations with my Maker, but this is a whole new level of awesome!
To make this cupcake stand, you will need
Open Design Space and choose the Saguaro Cactus #M102E76A Image. Ungroup it, and keep just the bottom layer. Size the cactus to about 10.5″ tall, and duplicate it. Create a 2 mm by 4.5″ box and slice the middle of the bottom of one of the cactus. Be sure to center the slice. Do the same thing for the other cactus, at the top. Then, use the slice tool again and slice the very top off of the cactus and branch to create a flat surface. Finally, add a 7″ circle to the design for the cupcakes to sit on. {You can find the modified cut file here}
Tips for cutting chipboard with your Cricut Maker
Use masking tape to tape the product to the cutting mat, and move the white star wheels to the side closest to the power button, and send the files to be cut. Because this is a thick material, and the Knife Blade will need to make several passes over the design, this will take longer than a typical Cricut project. During this time, it is SUPER important to keep your computer “awake”. If it goes into sleep mode, your Cricut will stop cutting. Some designs will take longer than others…For this reason, the Knife Blade cannot be used on a mobile device.
Assemble the Cactus Cake Plate
Once your files are cut, paint the cactus and assemble it. If you want to keep it small, and reusable, you can just set the topper right on top of the cactus, if you want something more stable, you could hot glue the topper to the top of the cactus. Either way, you have an AWESOME Cupcake Stand!
